Hypnagogic hallucinations

A storybook illustration depicting my experiences with hypnagogic hallucinations.

These hallucinations take place in the early stages of the sleep cycle, and the sleeper can see, hear, or even feel these manifestations come to life, often being very vivid. Common experiences that have been reported include seeing spiders, bugs buzzing/crawling, shadowy figures, and voices.

Some experience sleep paralysis while seeing these hallucinations, others sleepwalk.

(Or sleep-run, rather.)
